Interesting Info about Kidney Dialysis

Kidney dialysis aims to get rid the wastes and extra fluid through semi-permeable membrane, this membrane has thin surface with tiny holes that let small particles pass through, while large particles such as blood cells still inside the body.

There are two types of kidney dialysis, they include

Peritoneal dialysis: in which blood is cleaned inside the body. It cleans blood and removes extra fluids using one of your body’s own membranes, the peritoneal membrane, which is the lining surrounding the abdominal cavity.

Through this technique, we put a specific solution inside the peritoneum. Through this solution the body gets rid of its wastes, this solution containing the wastes is drained from the peritoneum after several hours (3-4 hours). This procedure is called an exchange.
The major complication of peritoneal dialysis is peritonitis. To avoid it, you should keep good hygiene. Generally, peritonitis is treated by massive course of antibiotics.

There are two types of peritoneal dialysis, they include
Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
Automated peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis: in which blood is filtered outside the body
Through this technique, blood is removed from the body and pumped by a machine through a dialyzer; this dialyzer is the semipermeable membrane that cleans blood.

Through this technique, two needles were put into a vein in the forearm. One of them takes blood outside the body to be cleaned. Through the second needle, the blood goes back to the body after cleaning. Hemodialysis is done three times every week, each time lasts about 3-4 hours.

The major complication of hemodialysis includes the following:
Formation of blood clots, which is the most common complications of hemodialysis.

Hypotension, due to loss fluid and salt during dialysis sessions. It is manifested by; headache, sweating, nausea & leg cramps.

Infection, which is manifested by fever, chills and local redness of access site of needles.
